JOY TO THE KING

If you need something special for your beginners to play at their first Christmas concert, Joy to the King can provide an easy and fun medley of the two popular beginner tunes "Ode to Joy" and "Good King Wenceslas." And with our site-licensing policy, your students can keep their parts as a keepsake of their first real band concert!

  • Melody distributed through all wind parts.

  • Independence of lines (melody played with/against simple bass accompaniment).
  • KEY and RANGES:
    B-flat major 

    Uses first five notes of the B-flat Concert scale. Clarinets also play low G.

    INSTRUMENTATION:
    Basic Instrumentation
    MINIMUM
    INSTRUMENTATION
    REQUIREMENTS:
    Flute or Trumpet, Clarinet, Bass Line*, up to 5 Percussion (can be reduced) 
      * At least one: Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, any Saxophone, Horn, Trombone, Baritone, or Tuba 
    PERCUSSION:
    Three percussion parts: 
      Percussion 1 = Snare Drum, Tenor Drum, Bass Drum 

      Percussion 2 = Cymbals, Finger Cymbals, Triangle 

      Bells/Mallets = any number of mallet instruments (melody line) 

  • These parts are simple, using only quarter-, half-, dotted-half, and whole notes. Two one-measure occurrences of sixteenth-notes in Snare and Tenor Drum part (shown in measure 13, 14 of Percussion 1 part).
